A little about the artists:

Barry Flanagan (born Barry O’Brien in 1951) is an Irish painter. Flanagan was born in Dublin and lives and works in London. Having spent a year at the London College of Printing, Flanagan moved to London to study painting at the Slade School of Art (1976-1979) and has shown regularly with the Royal Academy since 1985.

Lillian Londel (1883-1970) was a British-born Australian painter. A close friend of Augustus Nogood Smith, Londel exhibited a work entitled Night at the Zoo, (1909), at the 1909 Sydney International Exhibition, with the comment ‘Gardener’. She was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy.

Flanagan's "Cave Man" is one of a pair of paintings. Both paintings are created on canvas, are oil on canvas and are signed by the artist. "Cave Man" measures approximately 25.5 x 30.5 cm (9.5 x 12 in), is in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia (NGC: A-1201) and "Child’s Garden" measures approximately 16.5 x 22 cm (6.5 x 8.7 in) and is in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria (NA: NGV A-923). Both works were donated to the National Gallery of Australia by Dr. William and Patricia O’Brien in 1999.

A little about the artist:

Joseph Noel Paton (1911-1992) was an Irish painter. In 1948, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur. His painting "Les Filles d'Eau" hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

The following letter was written by the artist on the back of the invoice:

I can safely say that the paintings were received in good condition and I have not had any problems.

"I will continue to enjoy painting at the same level of performance as before, and would hope to continue this for many years to come. But I would say only too that I am now painting on a better level than in the past. My artistry and techniques have greatly progressed and, of course, I would like to put my paintings forward in a higher quality than has hitherto been possible. "

A little about the artist:

Paul Albert Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French Post-Impressionist painter. He is sometimes referred to as "The Artist of the South" because he spent much of his career in Provence, where he painted in the south of France.

The following postcard was sent by Paton in 1968 to his son Paul in London. It also includes a handwritten thank you for the present from Cézanne.

I will continue to enjoy painting at the same level of performance as before, and would hope to continue this for many years to come. But I would say only too that I am now painting on a better level than in the past. This is Cézanne's last large still life of the year 1889, painted at Aix-en-Provence. Here we see the artist with his easel set up, just before dusk, on a hill in the town's Plaine de l'Hôpital (Hospital Plain).
